INTRODUCTION TO BEACON
What is Beacon?
iBeacon is a trademark of Apple Inc.
Eddystone is the open beacon format from Google Inc.
Beacon is version of the BLE (Bluetooth Light Energy) technology to create a different way of providing location-based information and services to iPhones and Android devices. It allows Bluetooth devices to broadcast or receive tiny and static pieces of data within short distances in constant time intervals.
How Does It Work?
As the name says, Bluetooth Light Energy (Bluetooth version 4.0 and above) uses low energy, which is normally used to connect to low data rate devices.
The beacons acts as Bluetooth transmitters and Apps installed on the iOS/ Android listen out for the signal transmitted by these beacons and respond accordingly when the phone comes into range.
APPLICATIONS
Location Tracking
The beacons can be affixed to pallets, carts, and other movable equipment in all sorts of industries to track location as they move about. For example, beacons can be affixed to airline cargo containers, warehouse pallets, museum artwork, bulldozers at a construction sites, contractors at a job site, even hospital patients, students, or visitors (so they don’t get lost and their movement patterns can be discovered).
In-Shop Experience
Beacons can enhance the customer’s shopping experience. For example, in shopping malls, coffee shops, restaurants, etc the user can be provided with notifications about the special offers / discounts with an installed and compatible app on their iOS/ Android device. The beacons will be configured by the corresponding stores as according to their special offers.
Finding Lost Items
Beacon helps in finding your lost stuff in seconds. You can attach, stick, or place beacons inside everyday items such as keys, mobile phones, hand bags, wallets, etc and keep track of them using a configurable, easy-to-use app installed on your iOS/ Android devices.
Zoo / Museum
Imagine a Zoo mobile app, which visitors open once they get into the zoo. When they are close to selected attractions, the app shoots a notification with information of what is being looked at. Likewise, in Large Museums, with the help of an installed app the user can be made to receive notifications about a particular subject, art works, sculpture, etc which are closer to them.
